Abstract

Mangroves are the evergreen forests found along the coastal regions of tropical and sub-tropical countries. Ecologically and economically mangroves provide more benefits. Despite that they are threatened due to various natural and anthropogenic activities leading to degradation of mangrove vegetation. The major mangroves of Tamil Nadu including Pichavaram and Muthupet also had degraded a few decades back. However, timely intervention with the scientific conservation and restoration measures made them to sustain and continue to benefit the coastal community and the environment. Nevertheless, the revival of vegetation diversity of natural mangrove ecosystem, a natural process can be stimulated by designing and planning scientifically sound conservation and management strategies. This chapter introduces the importance of mangroves, ecology, and benefits in general and provides the status of Tamil Nadu mangroves and their extent in 2018 mapped using satellite data in specific.
