Abstract

Meiosis was studied in 34 and 35-chromosome hybrids from a cross between a Chinese Spring line (2n = 41) monosomic for chromosome 5B and T. timopheevi (2n = 28). Results indicated that chromosome 5B of T. timopheevi is less able to suppress the pairing of homeologous chromosomes than 5B of Chinese Spring.
Other studies, using T. zhukovskyi and a T. timopheevi x Aegilops squarrosa amphidiploid, indicated that chromosomes 3D and 5D of 6x wheats, which carry genes controlling homeologous pairing, were originally carried by Ae. squarrosa, the donor of the D genome. The T. zhukovskyi chromosome corresponding to 5A of T. monococcum does not carry a gene system identical to that located on 5A of T. aestivum and it is suggested that the 5A system of T. aestivum evolved after the incorporation of the A genome in 4x wheats.
