Over the last two centuries, science, technology and public policy have played a significant role in terms of helping farmers to increase agricultural productivity. Today, we are entering the new millennium with a number of advanced tools at hand. Among them, biotechnology is of major importance. The progress in the field of molecular biology, microbiology, and genetic engineering in the last two decades has been enormous.
