lt, was with great pride and joy that MSSRF staff members received the news on 5 June 1996, designated World Environment Day, that the Foundation had l,i~en chosen for the 1996 Blue Planet Prize. This prize was instituted by the Asahi Glass Foundation of Japan, chaired by Mr. Jiro Furumoto, on the occasion of the UN Conference on Environment and Development held at Rio in June 1992. It recognises the work of individuals, groups and organisations whose achievements have contributed to the resolution of global environment
problems. MSSRF is the first Blue Planet Prize winner from Asia.
