Abstract

Sustainable advances in biological productivity is indispensable for meeting the food, fuel, and other needs of our growing population. Biological diversity is essential for achieving sustainable gains in productivity per units of land, water, energy and time. We can neither sustain a national food security system nor face the challenges of climate change if we fail to conserve and utilize in a sustainable manner our genetic wealth in flora, fauna and microorganisms. Several organizations have come forward to prevent genetic erosion at the ecosystem, species and intra-specific levels. There is however, no sustained and coordinated research efforts are designed for saving the species under threat of extinction.
