Abstract

Mangroves are littoral plant communities that occur in inter-tidal marshy areas of tropical and subtropical countries. Mangroves thrive in these areas by means of adaptations such as thick and leathery leaves and salt-excreting glands, stilt roots, pneumatophores, and viviparous propagules. Interestingly, mangrove forests act as barriers against cyclones and tsunamis, reducing the tidal floods entering the mainland, thus minimizing the damage to property and life (Guebas, 2006). Mangroves reduce coastal erosion and also help in the land-building process by trapping the sediments. Mangrove wetlands serve as spawning and nursery grounds for many economically important fin-fishes and shellfishes.
