Abstract

Equitable gender relations are facilitated through the process of transforming gender, social norms, and power relations in society. In the context of changing agrarian relations, science and technologies have the potential to foster gender equality among farming communities. The chapter traces the process and
outcome of an action research project on gendered value chain development in the dairy sector. The project maps the gendered constraints for participation of women dairy farmers across the value chain and the potential science and technology solutions that can empower and enhance their participation across the value chain. The technological interventions are complemented by efforts at building the capacity of women dairy producers to access and control the various livelihood capitals, through a process of institution building. The technological interventions coupled with the institutional mechanism generated interconnected gendered outcomes in the productive and social reproductive space, mediating an irreversible process of changing gender relations at the household and community level. Changes in the gender division of labor; access and control over assets, resources, and services; improved knowledge, skills, and ability to translate them into practice; reduction in conflicts and violence; and improved mobility are some of the key indicators of changing gender relations. These interconnected gender outcomes facilitated the transformative changes through three important dimensions of empowerment, namely, building women’s agency, nurturing changes in social relations, and social structures. The chapter details the gender-transformative approaches and mechanisms adopted to promote the change and the process of key gendered outcomes that
facilitated gender equality.
